What is a crown?

A crown is a hand-made covering designed to fit over a tooth that needs rebuilding if it has been damaged or weakened. Crowns can also be used to reshape teeth for cosmetic reasons.

A crown will restore the strength of a tooth and can be made from metal or ceramic porcelain. Crowns which are made of porcelain are designed to match the colour, shape and translucency of your other natural teeth. The crown will probably last for many years, depending on the health of the tooth underneath and how well you look after your teeth.

Your Manor Square dentist will begin the treatment by shaping the tooth so, with the artificial crown, it will be the same size as a normal tooth. Preparation time will depend on how damaged the tooth is and whether it needs to be built up with a filling. The tooth might have to be root-filled first, with the nerve removed. The crown is sometimes held in place by a post in the root canal if a lot of the tooth is missing.

Impressions are taken using a soft, mouldable material that is used to make a model of the tooth for one of our skilled dental technicians, who then makes a crown to fit. At the preparation visit, you will be fitted with a temporary crown so that you don't have a gap while the permanent one is being made. (You can chew on a temporary crown but it won't be as strong as the finished one.)

Your Manor Square dentist will then need to see you again to replace your temporary crown with the final one and will make any small adjustments necessary to make sure you are happy with the fit and can bite comfortably.
