How does teeth whitening work?

teeth whitening

Everyday life takes its toll on our teeth. Drinking too much tea or coffee, smoking or even eating strongly coloured foods can stain our teeth and discolour them. As we get older, the colour of our teeth also changes and they can become more yellow. Teeth whitening or bleaching is a procedure for lightening the colour of teeth. It only works on natural teeth and will not work on any types of ‘false' teeth such as dentures, crowns and veneers. It is also important that teeth whitening is only carried out under the supervision of your dentist.

The most common way a dentist will whiten teeth is by using a special custom-made whitening tray and the application of a whitening agent. The dentist will begin by taking an impression of the teeth, upper and lower, with dental putty. Using that impression, a plastic tray will be made which in placed in the mouth and fits snugly and exactly around the teeth like a gum-shield. This will hold the whitening gel in place.

Teeth whitening treatment at Manor Square

At Manor Square, we use this teeth whitening method and give you your tray and gel to take home for use at your own convenience.

For the teeth whitening treatment with us, you will need 2 x 15 minute appointments with your Manor Square dentist, at least 8 days apart. On the first appointment, you will have impressions taken of your top and lower teeth, which are sent to the laboratory where they will cast models and make the soft trays.

On the second appointment, the trays will be ready for you to collect and your dentist will show you how to put a small amount of the whitening gel into the tray and how to slide it over your teeth. You will be recommended a course of treatment (usually between 1 and 4 hours a day), repeated each day for a period of 10 to 15 days. During this time your teeth will progressively whiten. You may find that your teeth are more sensitive after each application, but this is only temporary and should disappear within a few days of the treatment finishing.

Is teeth whitening safe?

Teeth whitening is completely safe and repeated whitening will not harm your teeth. However, it is important that the procedure is only carried out by qualified professionals such as your dentist.

Do I keep the whitening tray after using it?

Yes. The whitening tray is made specifically to fit your teeth and is yours to keep and re-use. You can then just purchase the whitening gel for future whitening treatments.
